3 Ways to Dive Deeper into the Stations of the Cross

It's coming! It's coming!! What do you say is coming? LENT. Lent is coming! And we know what all comes with Lent- parish fish fry, penance, Easter candy in stores for extra temptation, purple vestments, and of course weekly stations of the cross. As a young Catholic school student, I couldn't wait for Stations days (not just because we had shorter classes once a week), but because I knew the story we were remembering was something special; something that was remembered by millions before me. However, this awe and wonder with the Passion story I had is not present for everyone. So how can we help others be engaged in this prayer tradition?
1. Starting off on the right foot is key!
Intro the Stations with its Biblical roots and Church tradition
-it’s a universal church practice, not just here in your Church but all over the world Catholics are gathering for this prayer during Lent.
-it helps us enter better into the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ.
2. Allow for multiple viewings of the images by the young people
Most Catholic churches have at least one set of Stations hanging somewhere on the property -start with those. Maybe use the images from the movie The Passion of Christ which are more graphic than others, but can make an impact especially on older students. Encourage them to even look up their own version of the Stations and allow them to pray with the artistic style that strikes them most.
3. Make it a regular event to go to a Stations service at your parish
The weekly Stations service at church is not just for the LOL (little old ladies) in the parish. They are for everyone! Plus, getting all the youth to be involved at the parish is not a bad idea. You could also end the night with going for ice cream or pizza afterwards.
